(Headline USA) Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., refused to say this week whether Vice President Kamala Harris is a good running mate for President Joe Biden.
During an interview with CNN on Wednesday, Pelosi was asked if “there’s any chance [Biden] does not continue running” his reelection campaign.
“I hope not, I hope not,” she replied. “President Biden has – he has great experience and wisdom. He’s been at this for a long time, as you know, as a senator, vice president and now president.”
She admitted that a growing number of Democrats have “concerns” about his age, but claimed “everybody’s for him – overwhelmingly everybody’s for him.”
CNN’s Anderson Cooper then asked whether Harris’s presence on the ticket hurts Biden at all given her low approval ratings, and whether she’s the best choice for vice president a second time around.
“He thinks so,” Pelosi said of Biden. “And that’s what matters.”
Pelosi then tried to argue that Harris is “politically astute” despite her unpopularity.
“I don’t think people give her enough credit,” Pelosi said. “Her values are consistent with the president’s values. Why would she be vice president if she were not?”
Cooper continued to press Pelosi on her opinion of Harris, leading Pelosi to admit that the vice president doesn’t do much but is an “intellectual resource.”
“She’s the vice president of the United States. And when people say to me, ‘well, why isn’t she doing this or that?’ I say, ‘Because she’s the vice president. That’s the job description. You don’t do that much,’” Pelosi said.
Harris has been trying to better position herself ahead of 2024 as concerns about Biden’s age and mental competency grow. Last week, she said in an interview that she is prepared to take over for Biden should something happen to him.
