More than 168,000 tech-sector employees have lost their jobs since the start of 2023

More than 168,000 global technology-sector employees have been laid off since the start of 2023, according to data compiled by the website Layoffs.fyi.

The websiteโ€™s tally of 2023 global tech layoffs has gone up more than sixfoldย since mid-January.

The data show that 2023 has surpassed 2022 for global tech redundancies, with 561 tech companies laying off 168,203 employees since the start of the year. Last year, 1,024 tech companies laid off a total of 154,336 employees, according toย Layoffs.fyi.

At the end of March, Electronic Arts Inc. EA, -0.71% announcedย its intention to slash 6% of its workforce as the videogame publisher looks to cut costs. Streaming-media company Roku Inc.ย  ROKU, +1.31% also disclosed that itย would lay off 200 employeesย as part of a cost-cutting plan.

A host of tech companies, including Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, -0.32%, Palantir Technologies Inc. PLTR, +0.81%, ย Twilio Inc. TWLO, -0.71%, ย DocuSign Inc. DOCU, -0.45%, ย Salesforce Inc. CRM, -1.95%, ย SAP SAP, +0.69%, ย Zoom Video Communications Inc. ZM, -0.19%, ย eBay Inc. EBAY, -0.91%, ย Dell Technologies Inc. DELL, -0.75%, ย PayPal Holdings Inc. PYPL, +0.49%, ย International Business Machines Corp. IBM, -0.93%, ย Intel Corp. INTC, -0.26%, ย Microsoft Corp. MSFT, -0.02%, ย Spotify Technologyย  SPOT, +0.61% and Google parent Alphabet Inc.ย  GOOG, +1.56% GOOGL, +1.61% haveย announcedย job cuts in 2023.
